The district’s new phone policy has become a controversial topic so we went ahead and interviewed students who attend Enochs High School to get a real insight into how they personally feel about the newly established rules. All interviewed students own a phone. They all had a positive say about owning a phone for the first time, using words such as good, happy, and awesome. None of the students have been affected by the phone policy despite all of them disagreeing with it. Most students dislike the thought of putting their phones in an envelope and being confiscated for the whole day but the phone policy hasn’t affected any of the students personally.
Jahson Clay, a senior, believes phones have not affected his life. If he were to forget his phone at home he would go about his day. Reporter Joey asked “What’s your opinion about the school policy?” and Jahson answered, “I think it’s stupid [but] it’s beneficial for certain kids that have to be on their phones all the time.” He thinks that the administrators had no good reasoning for the phone policy and would rather discuss the situation with former vice principal Drake if he was working with the school and had the option to change said policy.
Fred Small, a junior, recently got his first phone just a few months ago. He finds phones to be an easier way to contact friends. Before getting the phone, he would walk to his friends’ houses and ask if they could hang out. Though he stated the policy has not affected him, along with believing the school administrators having a good reason for the phone policy, when asked how he would change the school’s new phone policy if he could, he answered “I would let all the people who need their phones for an emergency like if their parents call have access.”
Jordan McDoal, a senior, thinks the policy is dumb because we are mature enough to keep up with basic procedures. “I think that is dumb cuz I feel like since we are high schoolers I feel like we should be able to have phones out and have freedom.” Just like many other students, he checks his phone when he wakes up and before he goes to sleep. If he were to accidentally leave his phone somewhere he would miss his phone because that is one of his personal belongings that he has with him at all times. Owning a phone did not negatively affect his life but he says that a phone can only affect your life negatively if you let it. The school’s policy hasn’t affected him yet but ironically he thinks it is dumb, disagreeing with the administrators applying the policy he believes that the phone policy is over the top especially when the envelope comes into the picture. If he had the option to change the policy he says,” I’d probably just like.. have the teacher grab it and put it on their desk and you grab it at the end of the period.” concluding the interview
Overall, despite the controversy of this new phone policy, most students aren’t being affected.
Though they of course have their own opinions on it, whether that be that phones are needed for emergencies or are needed to pay attention, it has not negatively affected them. This may be due to the school year still being new, or it may be that students are okay with following rules when they know it will have a bad outcome if they don’t.
