The Super Bowl, a time where Americans come together to celebrate this amazing holiday regarding football. It’s just like Christmas! Just…without the presents, the ugly sweaters, gingerbread houses, baking, without Santa…but just as loved! Everyone talks about it, people get into fights on who they “know” will win, make a party, and that is one of the most important days of the year.
But as a non-football enthusiast, I don’t get it. I get being excited for a sports game, but I simply can’t comprehend the level of passion everyone else has, where they revolve their whole life around it. Some people have this devotion to football to the point that they become miserable and less productive when their team loses, as well as having rage outbursts, yelling, the works. However, it also brings excitement, joy, and hope that creates a level of balance.
Personally, I like watching football games, but not to the point that it has me yelling at my TV.
This Sunday was the first Super Bowl I actually sat down to watch entirely, and, to my surprise, I was actually entertained by it. I spent the day by watching it with my family while making some carne asada (it was amazing, by the way), and watching my dad yell at Taylor Swift when she was shown for cheering for the “wrong side”, which was the best part, in my opinion. I can’t call myself a fan, but I was disappointed when the 49ers lost since I was rooting for them.
If I could show what it feels like being semi-clueless about the game, this meme would be it. Everyone talks about the game before and after the fact, and I don’t have much to contribute since I don’t know many of the teams, players, or the history of each play.
Regardless, I also enjoyed the half-time show with Usher and Alicia Keys. They sung songs that I and many other people enjoyed. It honestly made me want to get up and dance. I’ve heard mixed opinions about them though, because some people believe there’s been better ones. Although I do agree, it was still a fun performance to watch.
Now lets talk about the commercials. My favorite one has to be the Duolingo one because it was short and funny (yes, my humor is broken). But the one thing that bothers me is; why can’t every-day commercials be like that? Super Bowl ones have creativity and they are fun to watch, unlike the regular ones that seem monotone and annoying. They don’t have to have celebrities to be good, which makes the ones in the Super Bowl iconic, and they can be very expensive to have them daily, but they should still have the same level of creativity to make the watcher less miserable.
I look forward to watching next year’s game and future ones. This one changed my mind because I thought they were pretty boring, besides the half-time shows before.
And maybe one day I’ll get the full experience of cursing at my TV to players who can’t even hear me.
