With Super Bowl LIX (59) on Sunday February 9th, the Philadelphia Eagles have walked away with the Vince Lombardi trophy. In a crushing defeat, the Kansas City Chiefs were not able to obtain the three peat they were aiming for. A three peat is winning the Super Bowl three seasons in a row, which has never been done before. The Eagles shut down the Chiefs idea of making history. With a final score of Eagles 40 to Chiefs 22, this is the second Lombardi trophy the Eagles now have. Both trophies have been obtained within 10 years and both under Eagles head coach, Nick Sirianni.

Key Philadelphia Eagles players were; quarterback Jalen Hurts #1 , kicker Jake Elliott #4, wide receiver Devonta Smith #6, wide receiver A.J. Brown #11, linebacker Josh Sweat #19, and cornerback/nickel Cooper DeJean #33. Although a team effort by players, coaches, coordinators, and trainers, these players truly made big plays to shut down Kansas City.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs star quarterback, was shut down time and time again. Along with Mahomes, Travis Kelce, tight end for the Chiefs, had a really poor game as well. There is much talk surrounding retirement for Kelce. At half time, the Eagles were up 24-0 with a higher amount of points than yards traveled by the Chief by this time, which was 23 yards. The Chiefs two touchdowns during the fourth quarter very much could have been due to the fact that the Eagles were putting in their second string players, such as quarterback Kenny Pickett.

The Eagles green Gatorade was dumped on head coach Sirianni with more than 2 minutes left in the game since it was a guaranteed win for Philadelphia. Many viral videos have surfaced of the city of Philadelphia partying up and down Broad Street till the sun rose. Philly did not party lightly following the huge win against America’s rivals.

Ansel Mello, Enoch high school kicker, was asked about the Eagles kicker Jake Elliott. He told me, “He was inconsistent and untrustworthy and had all the Eagles fans nervous whenever he would step out on the field. He was good but had an off second half of the season. He showed up for the big game” (Mello #12). Overall, Mello felt that the game was, “It was a great game. I loved watching the Eagles put it together and stop the three peat” (Mello).

Jason Campbell, Journalism and English teacher at Enochs told me, “I would watch Patrick Mahomes get dismantled for 24 straight hours. I thought the Chiefs were suspect all season and the Eagles proved it” (Campbell). His prediction for next year’s Super Bowl face off is between, “The Bengals and the 49ers” (Campbell).
