Following its victory over the Downey Knights Wednesday night, the Enochs Eagles claimed what it felt like was its rightful spot as Co-CCAL League champions for the first time since the Central California Athletic League was formed before the 2018-19 school year.
The last time Enochs won a league championship was in 2009 when it was part of the Modesto Metro Conference.
Team captain Mason Galvan has been a key piece in the team’s success this year, working to break the extended playoff drought and change the program’s culture.
“We play more as a team this season,” Galvan said, and noted that in contrast to previous seasons, “we are focused more on winning, not on our own stats.”
The regular season has featured no shortage of excitement – game-winning shots against Pitman, a vengeful triumph against rival Gregori, and a multitude of victorious court stormings all accentuate the things Enochs hopes to carry into the postseason and potentially make a run deep into the tournament.
With an overall record of 18-9 (8-2 CCAL), Enochs ties Gregori for the number one spot followed by Turlock. Because Gregori (23-5) holds a better overall record than Enochs and played a more difficult schedule, the Jaguars will likely hold a higher bracket spot despite earning an equal playoff bid as co-Champions of the league that includes Enochs, Downey, Gregori, Modesto, Turlock, and Pitman.
The Eagles are now awaiting their seeding information for the first round of playoffs, which should be made available by Sunday night at the latest. The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section will meet on Saturday, Feb. 15 to decide playoff brackets for the 2024-25 season, and currently, MaxPreps has Enochs ranked as the 17th best Sac-Joaquin Division 1 team – with 19 teams from that division officially making the playoffs. Pending the decision by the selection committee, Enochs will most likely be playing in an outbracket playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m., and could potentially host one of those games – which would be a first for the Enochs boys basketball program.
